Depression is treatable. In the case of depression, according to the findings of brain research, there are changes in the brain. Brain researchers were able to visualize this by using imaging techniques. Depression is not an unalterable fate. You can actively do something!
And if nothing works?
Perhaps exactly the advices mentioned in the following paragraph have already become very difficult for you, because you can no longer feel joy or interest, or the ability to concentrate is deteriorated. On the other hand you may have already solved the most problems for yourself in previous therapies. But some symptoms are persistent and do not want to disappear, e.g. pain, chest pressure, tingling and pulling in the arms, dizziness attacks (without medical explanation), sleep disturbances, etc. Then it’s time to start a therapy that will help your brain and your immune system recover.
What you can do for yourself
Since the beginning of the century we know that we can actively do something against depression! Despite this knowledge, only a small proportion of those affected are treated in a brain-friendly way. What does „brain-friendly“ mean? We need certain substances that the body produces itself, so that the affected areas in the brain can recover and regrow.
This includes physical exercise, with quite some effort (not too much and not too little). Walk in fresh air and try to get plenty of sunlight. Maintain relationships with friends and family. Do things that will spark your interest and be fun, laugh, enjoy things. However, reduce the consumption of alcohol. Listen and / or make music if that’s your thing or get creative in other ways. Practice relaxation procedures, yoga or qigong. Instead, as far as possible, leave depressing thoughts aside.
Stress, inflammatory processes and depression
Depression is usually triggered by emotional stress. Psychoneuroimmunology has also found changes in the immune system, which occur after a certain time in prolonged stress. The result is inflammatory processes in the body, a malaise, a bad immune system. Try to distinguish which stress in your professional or private life is objectively real and how you stress yourself. Perhaps you even manage to find out what personal „patterns“ are behind it, prohibitions, assignments, vows, self-deprecations, fears, etc. Often there are also traumas …
For curing or relieving depression, I do not advise against psychotropic drugs. They can be a good help to have positive experiences for a while. In many cases, especially with mild depression, you can do without psychotropic drugs. In my office I focus on medical hypnosis, solution-oriented short-term therapy and meditation:

- expands the consciousness.
- helps to distinguish „truth and poetry“.
- leads into the presence of inner peace.
Take responsibility for the state of your consciousness
Depression is not usually a brain disease. But the brain is affected of course. The altered chemical situation in the brain during depression goes hand in hand with a narrowing of thinking. One is fixated on stressful contents, e.g. worry, anger, resentment, or guilt feelings … It’s hard to say what’s cause and what’s effect.
When depression is accompanied by a narrowing of thought, it is time to turn inside and look again. First and foremost, this involves taking responsibility for one’s state of consciousness and taking a closer look at one’s own thoughts: what thoughts are the truth, and which are just „stories“? The above mentioned therapy methods can support this.
Depression and psychotropic drugs
In depression, the neurotransmitters in the brain are confused. Therefore, the doctor prescribes an antidepressant that interferes with the metabolism of the brain. As a result, more neurotransmitter are available for the transmission of information, in particular serotonin and norepinephrine. You feel more balanced and see more opportunities in your life.
